Companies have been investing in solar and battery storage across the United States to power their operations.
According to the new “Solar Means Business” report that was done by SEIA (Solar Energy Industry Association), Meta has been able to keep its top spot as the company that uses the most solar energy, while Google has remained at the top as the company that has the most energy storage.
When looking at Q1 of 2024, Meta, Google, and Amazon all incorporated the largest amounts of solar energy into their electricity usage. In addition, they also have the most extensive pipelines of new solar projects under contract.
Also, in Q1 of 2024, companies in the United States have installed close to 40 gigawatts (GW) of onsite and off-site solar capacity, and corporate storage use exceeded 1.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
Target has retained the top spot as the nation’s leading on-site corporate solar user. They have held the top spot for nine years.
Technology companies have also begun to get in on the solar action to keep up with data center growth as electricity demand increases.
“Solar Means Business” examined what could be the driver for the sudden interest in solar by many companies. Most companies that were surveyed said that the Inflation Reduction Act’s long-term clean energy incentives were a major factor.
